Bhaderwah (or Bhadarwah) is a town and tehsil in the Doda district of Jammu Division in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It has now been given the status of sub-district. The town is governed by a Notified Area Council (city council). The Bhaderwah valley is located in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains, 80 km (50 mi) from Batote. The town is known for its natural and environmental beauty and is popularly called as "Mini Kashmir".



How to Reach:

By Train:

The main railhead for Bhadarwah is Jammu Tawi (205 kms) where trains arrive from Delhi, Calcutta, Pune, Mumbai, Kanyakumari, Ahmedabad, etc. Recently train service has started till Udhampur (120 kms). 

By Road:

The journey to Bhadarwah is entertaining and thrilling. The journey can be divided into three logical parts: Road connecting Bhadarwah with Jammu, is a good, all-weather road with several sharp inclines and hairpin bends. All the roads are maintained by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), which clears the road of any obstructions resulting from natural causes like landslides and heavy snowfall. Deluxe busses are operated by J&K SRTC as well as other private transport agencies.

Chinta Valley

Chinta a picturesque valley located at a height of 6,500 feet, has thick coniferous forests on all sides and Chinta nallah flowing through it. Many scenic spots are situated around this place. One such place is known as Thuba, which is situated across Chinta nallah. Horse ride from Baggan to Thuba is enjoyable. Thuba is the highest point which separates the Chinta valley from Bhadarwah.This place also has ancient temple of Lord Shiva.

Sarthal is one of the mesmerizing valleys enroute Bhaderwah-Bani-Basohli Road which has now become a tourist circuit wherein the tourists divert from Lakhanpur to Bhaderwah via Bani Basohli Road after having break journey at Sarthal Valley. The route via Sarthal used to be the ancient traditional route for Bhadarwah, Bani, Basohli areas as a vital connecting link, passing through Chatergalla Pass, the Highest pass in the area. The valley is endowed with unique biodiversity. The ridge is the haven for Himalayan wild goat called as tahr, besides, bear, leopard, musk deer, monal and western tragopon and variety of birds and reptiles found in the area


Nalthi-Basti

Nalthi is 10 kms. from Bhadarwah which serves as a base camp for trekkers. It has come a junction point with the completion of Bhadarwah-Bani-Basholi road.Trekkers from Sarthal (Bani) and Bhadarwah take rest at this beautiful place after descending from or ascending to 10,500 feet high. Apart from dense deodar forests, it has been gifted with lushgreen patches of grasslands studded with blooming flowering plants of different colours. The cool breeze flowing across snow-clad mountains makes the place all the more fascinating in summer months.

Sartingal

Sartingal is another unexplored area situated on the southern extreme of Bhadarwah Valley. Sunshine on the one hand and the fragrant breeze from Kailash, Ashapati hills Sartingal and neighbouring forests on the other, make the place different from other spots.

Padri

Padri is a "Gali" of undulating landscape, located 40 kms. from Bhadarwah on Bhadarwah Chamba road, at a height of 10,500 feet. It is the highest point on Bhadarwah-Chamba road. It experiences heavy snow fall upto 5 metres and snow-melting continues right upto mid June. It is one of the most sought after picnic spot even now, and with the opening of interstate bus service between Bhadarwah and Chamba, its importance will increase. 


Bhaderwah Fort

It is a place of pride for the erstwhile kings of Chamba and Bhaderwah. The fort, which also housed several freedom fighters, including Pandit Kashyap Bandu, Sant Singh Teg and later former chief minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. It was built in 1733 and converted into jail in 1919. Latest LED-based Light and Sound System is being installed in the Fort which will be one of its kind in India.



 Seoj Meadow 

If Gulmarg and Pahalgam are jewels of "Paradise" on earth, Seoj Meadow is diamond in the crown of Bhadarwah, pride of Jammu region.The amazing beauty is found in plenty.

Jai Valley

Jai Valley is picturesque valley, 35 kms. from Bhadarwah. It is an extremely beautiful valley spread over 6 kms. Another extremely beautiful valley spread over 6 kms. Another nearby attraction is a beautiful sprawling meadow.

Best Time to Visit:

Bhaderwah experiences a cool and pleasant climate throughout the year. The best time to visit here is between March and November. Snowfall during winter months November to April is common here.

Billawar A Place To Visit

Billawar is Tehsil HQ. It is also known as BALAUR. Billawar was founded by Raja Bhopat Pal in 1598-1614 and it remained capital of Basohli Rajas. The descendants of the Royal family are known as “BILLAWARIAS”. The town has some ancient monuments. One of these is Mahabilvakeshwar Temple, one of the most revered Shiva temples of the area. It was known as Hari Hara Temple. The Billawar Town is situated on the Bank of NAAZ and BHINNI Nallahs.

According to one belief, Pandavas visited Billawar in the last year of their exile and were attracted by “BILL” trees in which Billawar abounds. The Temple MAHABILVAKESHWAR was built where Pandavas had worshipped. The Name BILL lateron turned into BILLAWAR. In Billawar there is a an ancient Hanuman’s statue built on a rock in the river Naaz.According to Dr Sukhdev Singh Charak, Billawar-Bashli was one of the three parent/ original states of the DUGGAR Group alongwith Jammu and Poonch.

Places To Visit In Billawar 

MACHHEDI


 

 

 

 

 

 It is situated at a height of 5000 ft. It is a beautiful Hill Station. It is a ridge blanked with thick CHIR, DEODHAR and SHRUBS. It experiences temperate type of climate. It receives winter rainfall from wetern disturbances and summer rainfall from mansoons. Cold winter and pleasant summer are the main attractinns of this place.

 
The water of this place can be compared with that of Cheshma Sahi (Kashmir). It is 30 Kms from Billawar (Tehsil HQ). Regular bus service plies from Billawar.

BHADDU

A prominent town of Billawar Tehsil, was also once the seat of Imperial Power. It was very small state comprising 36 villages. Bhaddu town is situated on Bhinni Naalah, a tributary of Ujh river. The descendants of the Royal family are called BHADWAL RAJPUTS.

MANKOTE (PRESENTLY CALLED RAMKOTE)

It is an importat town in Billawar tehsil. It is situated on a hillock on the bank of BASANTER STREAM on Dhar-Udhampur Road. It used to be a small state spread over an area of 24 Kms in length and 15 Kms in breadth. Mankote was founded by Raja Manak Dev, a contemporary of Raja Narsingh Dev of Jammu (1272-1314 AD). It was renamed by Raja Suchet Singh (1822-43 AD) as RAMKOTE.

SUKRALA MATA

The Most famous shrine dedicated to mother goddess is Sukrala Devi Shrine at a distance of 9.60 Kms from Billawar and about 75 Kms from Kathua. The Shrine is located at a height of 3500 ft on a hillock amidst sylevan surroundings. The white line coated imposing edifice of the temple stands erect majestically. The pilgrims have to scale flights of many steps to reach venerated temple. The holy shrine is the abode of goddess Mal Devi, the re-incarnation of Sharda Devi. The goddess has manifested herself here in the shape of a Shilla (Stone Slab) seated on a Brass Lion with a silver mounted head. Behind it is also an image of Mahishasur Murdini (re-incarnation of Maha-Luxmi) standing on the body of Mahishasur, the Demon King. The Goddess is four Armed with a sword in one of her hands. Many legends are associated with the Shrine. The Holy Shrine is believed to have been built by Madho Singh and exiled Prince of Chamba (Himachal Pardesh). The Pilgrimage to the Shrine is increasing every year. During the Navratras the Number goes upto over 50 thousand.

SHIV TEMPLE BILLAWAR (MAHABILVA KESHWAR TEMPLE) 

This most famous Shiva Shrine dates back to antiquity. Formerly known as the Hari-Hara Temple, it has Shiv Trimurti. Located in the Heart of Billawar Town, the temple is called Mahabilvaveshwar in view of abundance of Bilva trees in the area. It is believed that God Shiva is highly pleased when Bilva leaves, known as Bil-patri in local parlance, are offered to him. The temple spire is about 60 Ft high over a square sanctum,. The temple has a number of other images like that of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (5-headed), Ganesh and Bhairav. The temple edifice has been built with a chiselled and dressed stones which have been crumbling of late.

Also, this temple is very much related to the Maharaja Hari Singh’s (Dr Karan Singh’s father) family. There is an old saying that, if there is a mishappening/casuality in this royal family, A brick/stone having a spot of blood falls from the temple.

Hanuman Statue 

In Billawar there is an ancient Hanuman's statue built on a rock in the river Naz.Every morning many people from locality visit here for workship and seek the blessing of lord hanuman.
